  3.     DIED. Bill Terry, 90, first baseman and manager of the old New
  4. York Giants, who compiled a lifetime batting average of .341 and
  5. was the last National League player to hit above .400 in a season
  6. (.401 in 1930); in Jacksonville. A left-handed hitter who rarely
  7. struck out, Terry spent his major-league playing career (1923-36) 
  8. with the Giants. As manager, he won three pennants and one World
  9. Series title (1933).
